Speed Big Data Results with the New NetApp HPS Rack Solution

Today, NetApp announced the new High-Performance Storage (HPS) Rack. Prepackaged and preconfigured, the HPS Rack includes servers, management and monitoring software, and the open-source Lustre parallel file system, enabling organizations to shorten deployment time from months to days, lower risk, reduce total cost of ownership, and speed time to results.

For fast insight to action, the best software and hardware needs to be employed to achieve the highest levels of performance for our researchers,” said Scott Kornblum, managing director, Thesys Technologies, the infrastructure affiliate of Tradeworx. “Once we started running our NetApp E5400 and E2600 with Terascala’s LustreStack, it became dramatically easier for us to manage resources, helping us reduce costs. We can now monitor performance in real time and provide 5GB per second of throughput to our research group, giving them the tools they need to test and model new algorithms concurrently.”

The NetApp HPS Rack is built on the NetApp E-Series platform. Additionally, the NetApp HPS Rack can integrate Terascala LustreStack software to provide proven management and extensive analytics. With LustreStack, customers get a Lustre-based solution that deploys in minutes, is easy to manage, and is optimally tuned for applications and workflows. Administrators can get all the performance and scalability benefits of Lustre without the need for any in-house expertise, bringing rapid deployment, simplicity, and faster time to results to big data and HPC environments.

The NetApp HPS Rack will be demonstrated at next week’s SC12 Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, from November 10–16. Come and visit NetApp at booth #4626.

Numeddi Big Data Startup Wins Aptails Pharma Deal

Stanford University spinoff NuMedii has landed a deal with Aptalis Pharma to apply its predictive “Big Data” technology. The companies aim to hunt down and advance drugs to combat gastrointestinal ailments and cystic fibrosis, which are two areas of focus at Aptalis. The deal boosts the commercial credentials of NuMedii, building on the startup’s role in a pair of papers last year that showed how its computational method could quickly pair approved and generic drugs with new potential uses against diseases.

NuMedii’s predictive Big Data discovery technology and its preclinical de-risking expertise are a great fit with Aptalis’ proven capabilities in formulation, clinical development and commercialization of new therapeutics,” said Gini Deshpande, PhD, NuMedii’s CEO and co-founder.

In an interview, Deshpande said that the company is hunting for additional deals with specialty pharma groups as well as partnerships that would enable the company to identify new uses for “shelved” compounds no longer in clinical development. Read the Full Story.

Video: Cassandra – A Real Time Big Data Application

In this video, Manish Sood from the Reltio Startup presents: Cassandra – A Real Time Big Data Application. Recorded at the Cassandra 2012 Summit.

Reltio provides the world’s largest enterprise customers with real-time Big Data Applications that help business users understand markets, drive revenue and reduce risk through actionable, real-time and predictive insights integrated into applications and dashboards. These applications require the ability to not only handle data scale, latency, and high availability but also deliver capabilities that address reconciliation of data from multiple sources, handle multiple dimensions (various entities, relationships and interaction data) of varying complexity, with the ability to track audit and bi-temporal data. To solve this challenge, Reltio leverages Cassandra as the enabling data store for multi-tenancy, complex attribute structures, graph storage, real-time search and analytics. These capabilities are delivered as a Service to customers across verticals to address scenarios such as Extended Client views, Client experience & engagement, and Risk & Compliance.

Big Data You Can Touch

Steven Overly at the Washington Post writes that a new Startup called Augaroo aims to help companies make sense of Big Data through visualization. The company is developing a product called ZoomData that will allow businesses to create data charts and graphics on iPads and other Web-enabled devices.

There seemed to be a gap in the market that I noticed in terms of there wasn’t really an ability to create interactive and real-time data analysis,” said founder Justin Langseth.

The idea garnered Langseth top honors at a TechBuzz competition in May, where 28 upstarts pitched to a room of investors. Augaroo was named Best of the Buzz, and Langseth said the company could finalize an initial round of venture funding this summer. Read the Full Story.

Slidecast: Bina – Accelerating Data-Driven Healthcare

In this slidecast, Narges Bani Asadi from a new Startup called Bina presents: Bina – Accelerating Data-Driven Healthcare.

In 2008, a renowned team of researchers at Stanford and UC Berkeley came together to solve a critical problem for cancer researchers who were severely constrained by their existing computing capabilities for large-scale data analysis. Through this work they created a new approach to the integrated co-development of statistical algorithms, software and hardware for high performance data analysis. The result was a dramatic improvement in the accuracy, computational efficiency and cost of data analysis. The team founded Bina Technologies in 2010 to bring this approach to market.”

The Big Data Magnet for Startups

Martin LaMonica over at CNET writes that, while armies of entrepreneurs are trying to make money helping customers sifting through Big Data, one of the biggest challenges is simply getting control of the data in the first place.

The thing that’s really fun to me is that [big data] is majorly disruptive to the legacy vendors…and that will be good for startups,” said Michael Stonebreaker, an MIT professor and long-time entrepreneur behind a series of new database systems.
