Slidecast: ScaleOut Software — In-Memory Data Grids for the Enterprise

In this slidecast, Bill Bain and David Brinker from ScaleOut Software present an overview of the company’s in-memory data grid solutions for enterprise analytics.

ScaleOut StateServer runs as a distributed, software service on every Web or application server in your server farm to store data objects in memory and make them globally accessible across the farm within its distributed IMDG. These data objects contain serialized program data, such as Web session data, business logic objects, and data retrieved from a database server. Stored objects can be accessed from any client connected to the distributed data grid, and the grid enables simultaneous access by different clients to data objects stored on different grid servers.”

Perrenod: Why the Higgs Boson is not Dark Matter

Dr. Stephen Perrenod writes that the Higgs Boson particle detected by CERN recently is not Dark Matter.

The Higgs boson cannot be the explanation for dark matter for a very simple reason. Dark matter must be stable with a very long lifetime, persisting over the universe’s present age of 14 billion years. It mostly sits in space doing nothing except providing additional gravitational interaction with ordinary matter…The Higgs boson, on the other hand, decays very rapidly. There are various decay channels, including into quarks, W/Z bosons, leptons or photons, producing these in pairs (two Zs, two top quarks etc.). Sometimes even four particles are produced from a single Higgs decay. It is these decay products that are actually detected in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

Finding the Higgs particle was a Big Data problem of the first order. CERN scientists had to sift through more than 800 trillion collisions looking for the Higgs, and you can learn more about the ROOT software that made it possible in this Rich Report podcast.

Slidecast: ClusterStor 6000 to Debut at ISC’12 with up to 1 TB/sec

In this slidecast, Eric Lomascolo from Xyratex presents an overview of the company’s new ClusterStor 6000 storage system for HPC.

The ClusterStor 6000 is a truly next generation storage system developed to address the pervasive need for massively scalable storage systems within the HPC and broader Big Data market,” said Ken Claffey, Xyratex Senior Director of the ClusterStor Business Line. “ClusterStor provides two levels of integration. The first combines file systems and RAID data protection onto our embedded server modules and the second consolidates these capabilities into our high density storage platform as a Scalable Storage Unit. These levels of integration enable linear scalability delivering 1TB/sec file system performance with 30% less power, and floor space of competitive systems. With the performance needed in many new applications, the legacy approach to HPC data storage doesn’t work.”

Slidecast: Time-to-Answer – A Business-Driven Scorecard for Big Data

In this slidecast, Paul Barth from NewVantage Partners presents: Time-to-Answer – A Business-Driven Scorecard for Big Data. According to Barth, the key to business success is data preparation (cleanse, normalize, and integrate the data), not the total amount of data that you have.

NewVantage helps clients mitigate the risk of critical business initiatives — information strategy, data management/governance, customer/digital strategy, and business process alignment — through a focus on up-front planning and execution: current state assessment, future state vision, roadmap, business case, requirements, capabilities, business architecture, and by providing a critical link between business and technology strategy and capabilities. Succcessful business transformation requires committed business sponsorship and strong technology partnership, and benefit from the independent, expert perspectives of business and technology executives who have “sat in the chair”.

Podcast: Spectra to Deliver 380 Petabytes of Tape Storage to Blue Waters

In this podcast, Michelle Butler from NCSA and Molly Rector from Spectra Logic discuss the massive tape storage system that is being deployed for the 10 Petaflop Blue Waters supercomputer. As announced this week, the Blue Waters system will be one of the world’s largest active file repositories stored on tape media and will scale to a capacity of 380 raw petabytes within the first two years of operation.

NCSA designed Blue Waters to be one of the largest, most powerful supercomputing ecosystems in the world,” said Bill Kramer deputy director of the Blue Waters project at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. “The Spectra Logic T-Finity met our rigorous requirements with its high enterprise-level performance, ready data accessibility and massively scalable capacity. We are confident it will provide our user community with fast, reliable access to the massive volumes of critical data stored within Blue Waters’ Petascale near-line file repository.”

Spectra T-Finity tape libraries will provide the Blue Waters project with the ability to keep all near-line data accessible in an active repository, perform automated data integrity verification for the data store, and deliver high performance read/write rates of up to 2.2 PBs per hour utilizing enterprise TS1140 Technology tape drives.
