Big Data Career Opportunities Abound

How hot is the Big Data job market? Carolyn Duffy Marsan from Network World writes that Data Scientists are all the rage.

Unheard of 18 months ago, “data scientist” has exploded in popularity as a Google search term. The number of Google searches of “data scientist” hit peaks 20 times higher than normal in the last quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012. It’s a popular search term in high-tech hotspots such as San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and New York. Among the U.S. companies looking to hire data scientists are PayPal, Amazon, and HP. Indeed, the term “data scientist” is mentioned in 195 job listings on the Dice.com website for IT professionals.

Labor: The Big Data Bottleneck

Paul Sonderegger from Oracle Endeca writes that the biggest bottleneck in making Big Data productive is labor.

In a big data world, data modeling, integration, and performance tuning are governors of data use because they rely on relatively slow manual processes done by relatively expensive specialists. In an ironic twist, the substitution of computing capital for labor that transformed other business processes (such as inventory management, manufacturing, and accounting) will do the same to information management itself. Take the relatively simple case of a data mart with fast-growing volume. As the volume of data grows, query performance tuning becomes both more important and more difficult. Performance tuning requires trade-offs. For example, pre-aggregating the data improves query response but cuts off the user from detailed data which may be valuable for certain investigations. As data volume grows, more data aggregation may be required, eliminating levels of detail that used to be available. When the users rebel, the BI team has to haggle over remediation and strike a new balance. This time-consuming approach is simply unaffordable in a big-data world.

Feds Face Big Need for More Data Scientists

Patrick Marshall over at Government Computing News writes that the public sector is facing a growing need for data scientists.

Finding the people who can derive actionable insight from large amounts of data is a tremendous challenge,” said Michael Chui, senior analyst a McKinsey Global Institute. His team has estimated a potential gap of approximately 140,000 to 190,000 potential positions. “That suggests some interesting things from a policy standpoint. If you are a leader of a public-sector organization finding that type of talent, motivating them in retaining them will be very important for you if you’re to be able to do your job. “As a policy-maker, if you recognize this is going to be a basis of competition not only for companies but for countries it will be very important to try and make sure that we have the right policies in place so that we are educating and graduating people with these types of skills,” he said.

What is a Data Scientist?

Gil Press has posted some interesting thoughts on What is a Data Scientist?

The non-start-ups, the large companies trying to mine the benefits of the big data wave, not only have to compete hard for data scientists, but also to make sure that they have clean data to work with. According to Gartner (quoted here), more than 35 per cent of companies’ IT budgets will be outside of the IT department’s control in 2012 and beyond. “Increasing volumes of data, while a boon in terms of customer insight and engagement, will create challenges around managing and interpreting that information. As budgetary control shifts, there is a concern that the IT department will no long be able to guarantee just how accurate or consistent that data is.”

Well, I always said consistency is over-rated. And besides, that data scientist you just hired, may turn any data, accurate or otherwise, into music. That’s what Domenico Vicinanza did at SC11, turning big data into a concert of electronic music.

Data Scientists Helping Businesses Navigate Seas of Information

Nicole Laskowski writes about the emerging job category known as data scientists. At companies such as Google, Foursquare, and Groupon, she says these positions involve a combination of analytical, statistical, machine-learning, coding and quantitative skills, underscored by the harder-to-teach characteristics of curiosity and a willingness to explore large amounts of data.

I used to call them data mining engineers or sometimes data miners or computational statisticians, but scientists seems apropos these days,” said Usama Fayyad, former chief data officer at Yahoo Inc. and current chairman and chief technology officer at ChoozOn Corp. “The complexity of data in volume, velocity and variety has increased enough to justify that.”
