The R User Conference 2014

useR_logoI am really looking forward to attending my first useR! conference – coming to Los Angeles June 30-July 3. I’ll be at the big show to cover all the late breaking R news and report back to you all here. This annual conference jumps around the globe, alternating between the U.S. and Europe (last year’s conference was held in Spain). This year the conference will take place on the campus of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), my alma mater. The conference is being organized with support from the UCLA Statistics Department, the Foundation for Open Access Statistics and the Los Angeles R user group.

I recommend this event to anyone who uses R. Especially if you’re a data scientist, this conference can provide you all the new techniques to last out the year. For a relatively low price you can attend great talks and you can network with the leaders of the R community from around the world. You can learn an awful lot by getting immersed in a useR! conference. Registration is HERE.

The annual useR! international R User conference is the main meeting of the R user and developer community. Its program consists of both invited and user-contributed presentations:

  • The invited keynote lectures cover a broad spectrum of topics ranging from technical and R-related computing issues to general statistical topics of current interest.
  • The user-contributed presentations are submitted as abstracts prior to the conference and may be related to (virtually) any R-related topic. The presentations are typically organized in sessions of either broad or special interest, which also comprise a “free” discussion format. Such a discussion format not only provides a forum for software demonstrations and detailed discussions but also supports the self-organization of the respective communities.

I started looking over all the sessions titles and there are some great talks scheduled. Here is a small sampling of the ones I favor:

  • Shiny Demos of Statistical Modelling
  • 10 R packages to win Kaggle competitions
  • Generalized Linear Models on Large Data Sets
  • Adaptive Resampling in a Parallel World
  • How Popular is R?
  • Zillow’s Big Data and Real-time Services in R
  • Package mlr: Machine Learning in R

I’m especially looking forward to Tuesday’s morning keynote address by John Chambers, the father of R, and Hadley Wickham’s session on dplyr.

The top sponsors of useR! 2014 are RStudio, Revolution Analytics (who offered to sponsor my attendance as press), and Oracle. One of the local organizers is the Los Angeles R user group who will put on a special meetup on Tuesday evening, July 1 that is open to the public and designed for those unable to attend the conference. The theme of the meetup is “R’s Place in the Production Environment” with panel participants from Gravity-AOL, RStudio, Google, CARD.com, Activision, and Etsy.

See you all at useR! 2014!
