Skyera Unveils skyEagle All-Flash Array, Breaks $2/GB Price

Last week Skyera, a make of all flash array storage announced the skyEagle Series. Available in the first half of 2014, this product is notable for breaking the $2/GB barrier for an all-flash array.

The product boasts an impressive 500 TB of capacity in a 1 U form factor. In contrast, the largest capacity available in 1 U for hard disk drives is 16 TB, and that would be using relatively slow SATA drives. The product includes dual controllers (active-active), both synchronous and asynchronous replication, compression and deduplication. With deduplication the company claims an effective capacity of 2.5 Petabytes, and a cost of $0.49 per GB.

The product comes with 16 ports supporting both 16 Gb Fibrechannel and 10 Gb Ethernet, and has an option for up to 96 lanes of PCIe connectivity. In addition to the block SAN protocols FC and iSCSI, it also supports NFS and CIFS file-based NAS storage.

As demonstrated by this announcement, SSD prices are continuing to fall, and this technology is rapidly becoming the best choice for large data sets that require high performance.
